Learn chess in the classes

Curriculum Chess Classes

Our curriculum classes are designed for elementary school students in grades K-5, beginning with the foundational rules of chess and progressing to more advanced tactics and strategies. Students start by learning the names and movements of the pieces, as well as their relative values. They then explore key concepts such as check, checkmate, and stalemate. Following this, students are introduced to special moves like en passant and castling. As they gain proficiency, they learn to develop their pieces and engage in complete games, adhering to all standard rules. Students will also focus on fundamental tactics, including forks, pins, and basic checkmate patterns.

Depending on their grade level, students will also delve into the history of chess by studying classic games played by renowned players such as Paul Morphy, Bobby Fischer, and Wilhelm Steinitz. For older or more advanced students (grades 4-5), discussions extend to current developments in the chess world, including coverage of World Championship matches and analysis of games by legendary players like GM Magnus Carlsen and GM Judit Polgár.

To ensure comprehensive coverage, an instructor will rotate between K-2 grade classes one semester and 3-5 grade classes the following semester.

Learn chess after-school

After-School Chess Club

In the after-school Chess Club, students engage more in-depth with strategic concepts and tactics, honing their skills in a more competitive and analytical environment. They become proficient in using a chess clock and regularly practice chess notation. The club also organizes in-house tournaments, where students analyze games played by some of the world’s top players, gaining insights on how to incorporate these strategies into their own gameplay. Notable grandmasters whose games are analyzed include Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Magnus Carlsen, and Judit Polgár.

Progress is continually assessed by the instructor, who observes students’ games during class. Additionally, games are analyzed collectively, allowing students to learn from each other.

The after-school Chess Club is designed for students eager to explore the game at a deeper, more advanced level. These students often compete in tournaments and may progress to city, state, and national competitions. While tournament participation is encouraged, it is not mandatory.

The Chess Club is open to all players, regardless of skill level.
